The RIO is a sizzling summer style that can be made as a top or dress. The tutorials show how to make it five different ways. The top has a cross-over back with a deep ruffle around the hemline. Choose from two ruffle styles, gathered or flared. The dress is a simple flared A-line shape that can be cut on bias or straight fabric grain with optional in-seam side pockets. The neckline and armholes have an over-edge binding trim which can be made with knit binding or woven bias binding. A binding pattern is included so you can make your own or use ready-made bindings to save time.
There is the option to have a facing and straps instead of binding on the neck and armholes. The facing patterns will fit both top and dress versions.
A further option is to make the top without the ruffle trim by lengthening the bodice and using a bobble or other edging trim to accentuate the hemline.
SIZES: 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 to fit girls 4 to 14 years old. Size Charts in metric and imperial are included in the pattern file.
FABRIC:The best fabrics to use are lightweight wovens such as homespun, lawn, voile, seersucker and poplin. Minimal stretch, 2-way stretch knits are also suitable; avoid using 4-way stretch for this project as the result will not be true to size.
EXPERIENCE: Advanced beginner. The main construction is simple but the over-edge binding requires careful attention to detail and accuracy. If you have not tried this before it is best to do some practice before attempting the dress/top. Follow the tutorial closely for best results
